Long Weekend LLC
We make mobile apps for consumers (via App Stores) and other businesses. We focus on iOS and Android native apps.
We have a successful product line in the iOS "language learning" space and are looking to expand that brand.
We have an existing Japanese study product called "Japanese Flash". With a 4.5+ rating on iTunes and over 70 five-star reviews, we're very proud of it (hell, we made it for *us* originally).

Now, we're making Chinese Flash, which is essentially the same application, with a different dictionary (Chinese->English) and some modifications that are appropriate for Chinese learning.
We need the following items designed:
1. App icon (should be 512x512 or larger, or preferably, in vector format - EPS, AI. Additionally, the app icon should be a square -- the "rounded corners" effect is handled by Apple for us, it's actually bad if the source design contains this -- but if it can be added for a mockup, that's going to be very helpful)
2. App "splash" screen, which is effectively a logo (minimum size is Retina size, 460w by 960h). This graphic will be used for the Chinese Flash web site as well as inside the application displayed when the user first launches the app. Format-wise, vector is always better, but we'd accept a Pixelmator or Photoshop file with appropriate layers (e.g. if there is a background color we'd want it on a separate layer so we can experiment with colors, et al).
Overall, we want you to consider the Japanese Flash icon & splash screen/logo first when designing, as we are trying to create a brand among these products.
That said, we're not 100% happy with the Japanese Flash logo (we love the icon though), so we could end up asking you to redesign Japanese Flash around your concept for Chinese Flash, if we really love it.
Ideally, though, it'd be something where if I saw both icons, I could see that they are related, but different apps. The text under the icon will be "CFlash" on the iPhone home screen.
Since we are talking about a brand of language learning apps, "language flags" could come into it -- but that gets hairy with Chinese because there are multiple countries that speak Mandarin Chinese -- up to you if you can find a good way to do it.
I've attached the Japanese Flash icons and splash screen logo for reference.
We like to be fun, but serious about what we do (hopefully our website communicates this: longweekendmobile.com).
In the same way, we want an app logo/icon that communicates fun (because studying vocabulary isn't inherently a fun activity), but also in a serious way, that we're very serious about correct study habits, good data, and REALLY LEARNING SOMETHING.
