This logo will be used to create a branding iron design used to fire brand the skin on our slab bacon and as our logo on a festival stall, website, packaging etc...
What is “Slab Bacon”?
Slab bacon is just normal bacon before it's been sliced. It's cured and usually smoked, and comes in a large, rectangular "slab" with the rind still attached.
This allows a lot more flexibility with how it is cut and used. It can be cut into thick or thin slices or chunky lardons or even roasted whole. The rind can be removed to make homemade crackling or left on per preference.
What marks our product out as different?
We only use British-reared, free-range pork to ensure that the welfare of our meat is top most. We take out time with the product, nothing is rushed. The slabs are hand-rubbed with our special cure mixtures, and left for the salt and spices to do their work. We smoke and dry age all our slabs to give a huge depth of flavour. This whole process takes weeks to achieve, not days like commercial products.
The slab is dry in texture and nice golden brown colour. ***We will be using this logo on a branding iron to burn it to the surface of the slab.***
What are the keywords that provide the imagery for Slab Bacon?
This could be described as a masculine product – apologies for the sexist nature of that statement, but I am sure you can see what I mean…
The words that come to mind are: fire, smoke, meat, industrial, vintage, Victorian fairground, steampunk, Victorian, wild west, outdoors, wood, thick, solid, burn, branding iron, beard, axe, chop, BBQ, grease, lardon, salty, original, best, smoulder, pioneer.
What are the colours which suit the image we are seeking?
This need to be primal solid colours that suit the above words. As this will be turned into a branding iron, the logo needs to work as a solid black design. However, the design should also be possible to come in other colours – browns and reds mainly.
What else do you need to be aware of for this logo?
- This will be used on all the product packaging, the branding iron, website, etc. so needs to be either a design that can be resized easily or can be deconstructed in a way to make either long and thin or square as required.
- The design can be complex or intricate, as long as it is transferable to a stamp or branding iron format. This means that shading cannot be used and it will need to be monochromatic.
- The words “Slab Bacon” are also required – perhaps even “The Slab Bacon Co” – see what works/fits. The words and image need to be separable - they may not always be used together.
- The brand will be 3sq. inches in size (20 square centimeters for the non-Americans), so will need to fit in this space and be clearly readable. The shape is up to you.
What do we NOT want?
No cartoon pigs!
